Methods:
The technique that will be used in finding the allelopathic effect of sunflower extract on grass
seeds will be allelopathy. We will use the plant extract application as a method of
experimentation. Based upon research of the allelopathic effects of different parts of the
sunflower, we will be testing to see if there is a difference on the germination of grass seeds
when grown in petri dishes using sunflower leaf extract, sunflower seed hull extract, and grass
seed extract as our independent variables. The control variable will be water.
We will be conducting two trials of this experiment using eight petri dishes. Ten grass seeds will
be placed into each petri dish on top of filter paper. The filter paper in each dish will then be
soaked with one of the four extracts: water, grass seed extract, sunflower seed hull extract, and
sunflower leaf extract. Each dish will be kept constant under the heating lamps with the same
temperature and light conditions. Over the course of two weeks, the number of germinated
seeds in each petri dish will be counted every day, and extract will be added if the filter paper
becomes dry. This will show the germination rate for each extract and help to determine if
sunflowers are really allelopathic to grass seeds and which parts are more allelopathic than
others.
Introduction:
The concept being examined is allelopathy of sunflowers. Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) were
discovered to have allelopathic chemicals that may inhibit or benefit the growth of other plants
during germination (Leather 1983). The experiment will determine if sunflowers are allelopathic
to grass. The grass that is being used in this experience is called Lolium perenne. It was
discovered that this specific type of grass had the quickest germination rate in a previous
experiment that had been completed in an earlier lab. Grass was chosen because it was shown
in research data that showed that sunflowers could have an allelopathic relationship with
grasses and weeds (Leather 1983).
In research studies, it was found that there is a chemical difference in the sunflower leaves and
the sunflower seed hulls (Land 1997). The experiment will compare the different effects of the
leaves and seed hulls on the grass seeds growing. The data should show that the sunflower
seed hulls are more allelopathic to the grass than the sunflower leaves. Sunflower seed hulls
have a toxin in them that inhibits the growth of other plants (Johnson 2018).
In this experiment, we will study the allelopathy difference of the sunflower seed hull and the
sunflower leaves on growing grass seeds. This will be done in two different trial with four
different extracts. The hypothesis being tested is that the sunflower seed hulls will be more
allelopathic to grass seeds compared to the sunflower leaves. The independent variables are
the four different extracts, sunflower seed hull extract, sunflower leaves extract, grass seed
extract, and water. The dependent variables are the germination and growth rate of the grass
seeds.
