You are buying a new computer. You want the computer to run Microsoft Office 2016 or Office 365, and you want to make sure you are protected against security threats. You need to decide if you want a desktop, a laptop, or a tablet. You also need a printer. However, you have a limited budget and can spend no more than $900 for everything (all hardware and software).

  1. Decide whether you want a desktop, a laptop, or a tablet, and then enter that in the table.
  2. If you decide to get a laptop or a tablet, consider whether you will need an external keyboard and mouse, and whether you want to purchase a large monitor so that you can use the smaller computer more comfortably.
  3. Decide which edition of Office you want—a version of Office 2016 or Office 365—and enter it in the first column of the table. Search the Microsoft website to find a description of the software included with each edition of Office, and then search for the hardware requirements for running the edition that you chose. If necessary, change the hardware requirements in the table.
  4. Research the cost of your new computer system. To begin, visit local stores, look at advertisements, or search the web for computer system retailers. Most computer retailers sell complete systems that come with all the necessary hardware, an operating system, and additional software already installed. Consider visiting a small, local computer store that has the capability to custom-build a desktop system for you or sell you a refurbished laptop with a guarantee. In the Computer Retailer #1 column of the table, fill in the specifications for the system you chose. If any item listed as a minimum requirement is not included with the system you chose, find the cost of adding that item and enter the price in the table. Repeat this process with systems from two other retailers, entering the specifications in the Computer Retailer #2 and Computer Retailer #3 columns.
  5. If the system you chose does not come with a printer, add a color inkjet printer priced within your budget.
  6. If the system you chose does not come with antivirus software, search the web for the cost, if any, of an antivirus software package. Make sure you look up reviews of the package you choose. Decide whether to purchase this software or download free software, and enter this cost in the table.
  7. If you decide you need a router with a built-in firewall, search the web for the price of one. Enter this information in the table.
  8. Total the costs you entered in the table for the various items. Is the total cost $900 or less? If not, revisit some of the items. Can you get a less expensive printer? Do you need to downgrade to a less expensive monitor? Likewise, if you are under budget, upgrade a part of your system. For example, if the system you chose meets only the minimum requirements for running Windows and Office, consider upgrading the processor or adding more RAM. Or perhaps you can afford to upgrade the monitor to a larger one. Reevaluate your choices if necessary and try to get your total cost close to $900.
