Description

Reflect back on what you have learned in this course about how to construct high-quality arguments for positions. Give an example of how the ability to think logically and to construct good arguments could help you in your career and in your daily life. In what ways the skill of being able to evaluate the quality of reasoning on all sides will better enable you to discover what is true and to make better choices? (Feel free to reference the specific area of life that you raised in your post your introduction in Week 1.)

Finally, consider the argument you have been developing for your writing assignments. How has fairly considering multiple points of view helped you clarify your own perspective? What advice would you give to people to help them understand issues more clearly and objectively while being fair to all sides? Feel free to comment on any other values you have gained from this course so far.

Your journal entry must be at least 250 words. You do not need to follow APA style for this journal entry, but you should proofread your work to eliminate errors of grammar and spelling.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND RELATIONSHIPS

Introduction
This article hopes to discuss the relationship between social media and relationships. Social
media has had numerous impacts on society in general and has affected different cultural aspects.
We explore the cultural variables of human interaction and communication in regards to
relationships and social media. Social media has been accused of being addictive with studies
showing that people have become attached to social media to the extent of constantly being on
their phones. According to Savoie (2018), social media use has become so popular that human
interaction has been surpassed by the use of social networking sites. This has made people poor at
social interactions and building strong relationships. Social media has at the same time been seen
to allow people to gain friends from all over the world and be able to maintain long distance
relationships with loved ones(Pandita, 2019). It is therefore important to consider; does social
media have a negative impact on relationships?
Article Against Social Media and Relationships
The first article is a blog post from a website named Mydomaine. This article details how social
media destroys relationships in regards to social interaction and maintaining relationships. The
author offers the following premises to support their reasoning:
Premise 1: The author believes that social media has reduced the amount of time that people
have to interact face to face. This means that people become less sociable which reflects not
being able to develop and maintain relationships (Savoie, 2018).
Premise 2: The article argues that due to the amount of time that people spend on their phones,
they are not able to give attention to the other people in the relationship. This can, therefore,

strain a relationship making it weak since personal and physical interaction is less (Savoie,
2018).
Evaluation of the Quality of the Argument Against Social Media and Relationships
Evaluating the first premise, we realize that social media has been related to the decrease
in social interactions. This is due to the fact that social media has allowed people to interact
virtually over social media platforms. This requires the use of electronic devices rather than the
conventional face to face interaction. With this type of social interaction, we realize that the
quality of relationships has been seen to reduce. Face to face relationships allows people to be
able to read others hence enable them to relate better socially. When people cannot be able to
interpret people reactions and behaviors in social settings, it means they get a hard time building
relationships.
Social media has been seen to be very addictive especially to the young people. This
addiction allows people to spend a lot of time online and keep them checking on their social
platforms now and then. For people who are in a relationship, this constant checking of social
media platforms can prevent a person from concentrating on what their partners may be saying.
This would, in turn, seem like the person does not care for the needs of their partner hence strain
their relationships. Too much time on social media also means that people have less physical
time together which is an important element of building a strong relationship.
Article Supporting Social Media and Relationships
The second article is from a website named Techspirited. This article gives insight into
the positive impacts of social media and relationship citing that social media has allowed people
to be able to relate with more people and foster more relationships.

Premise 1: Social media platforms allows people to be able to relate to a lot of people
since they have many users from all over the world. This allows even the people who are poor at
social interactions to make friends online (Pandita, 2019).
Premise 2: Social Media platforms allow people to have friends from all over the world
and to be able to keep in touch with them easily. This means it allows them to foster
relationships with international friends as well as loved ones who might be living far (Pandita,
2019).
Evaluation of the Quality of the Argument supporting social media and relationships
Social media platforms have allowed people to be able to connect with many other people
worldview. This is because social media platforms have millions of users from all over the
world. This has made social media an ideal place for people who have poor social skills. Using
these platforms, they are able to find people who share the same interests as they do and develop
a friendship. This is hard to do in a face to face interaction since people cannot learn who shares
similar interests with them just by looking at them. This becomes a challenge for people with
poor social skills and for introverts. Social media ensures all people are able to relate in one way
or another.
Social media platforms have enhanced globalization where people can share and relate
with each other form all over the world. People using social media can share live events
happening in different parts of the world with their friends and loved ones. This ensures that they
keep in touch and maintain their relationship even with the challenge of the distance between
them. Social media platforms, therefore, allow easier communication even with loved ones who
are not far away since it is easier to pass along a message or share a video that will connect with

the other person hence creating a stronger bond. This shows how important social media is in
maintaining both long distance and normal distance relationships.

Impact of Social Media on Relationships
Research Question: Does the use of social media tend to improve or harm relationships?
The primary facet of social media is its focus on making and maintaining relationships.
The contents people create within the spheres of social media are inclined to establish and
enhance more intimate relationships with individuals, in some cases, individuals that could not
have been met via any other way (Halpern, 2013). The fascinating aspect of social media is
altering the basis of the ways people relate. This essay argues how the use of social networking
platforms improves relationships.
Social media is a fundamental tool that enables people to build positive connections with
others who are sometimes interested in exploring one’s expertise and interests. In fact, it connects
one to professionals and new employment opportunities. Nowadays, employers are insisting on
seeing the social media profiles, and sometimes might even not ask for a formal resume (Hudson
et al., 2015). Still, on this point of connection, social media helps people to leverage their mutual
interests to interact with individuals who might be uncomfortable in face to face talk.
Apart from enhancing the connection between people, social media improves
relationships via expanding one’s dating pool and exposing them to new matches. Some apps like
Tinder widens the interaction networks by introducing people to possible dates that they could
not have met via the usual daily routines (Baruah, 2012). Users are enabled to select which
individuals in which social circles and age groups they wish to meet.
Social media platforms like Facebook and Whatsapp offers an opportunity to retain
unique relationships with family and friends, despite the distance. Beside the special role of

dating, social media allows people to remain in touch with others, keeping updates on both
important matters like available job vacancies and social matters like who is getting engaged and
having children (Liang et al., 2011). With an easy click of a button on the phone, individuals
share their life experiences with old friends and former workmates. Further, social media has
been proven to act as a platform for self-expression and influencing how people share their
personalities.
However, the anti-social media have something negative to say about social networking
platforms. They argue that social media poses more harm to relationships than benefits. Couples
are mostly complaining lack of quality time with one another since partners are consistently held
up on social media to explore what is transpiring on the lives of others. This has potential to
harm relationships, as communication is vital to maintaining a good relationship (Baruah, 2012).
Therefore, in this case, it is difficult to judge the credibility and commitment of each partner in
that relationship, since it cannot be gauged on social networking platforms.
In conclusion, this paper has argued for the use of social media and shown how it
improves relationships. In the last body paragraph, the argument used by antisocial media is well
presented. Social media platforms connect people and allow them to remain in touch regardless
of the distance. However, it is imperative to use these sites in the right manner as it can
drastically improve the quality of the relationship. Everybody should understand that technology
is here to stay and therefore it is their responsibility to put it into good use.

The use of social media has both positive impacts and negative impacts on one’s relationship.
Some of the negative effects of social media include; increased feelings of jealousy. When one is
dating and they tend to make posts of their dating life on the social media, his/her friends will
tend to compare what is going on in their relationships to those they see on social media
platforms. In case they are unable to attain a similar standard they will become jealousy.
Additionally, if one goes through the social media accounts of their ex-girlfriend or boyfriend
after a breakup, it will hinder them from healing and moving on. Checking the accounts will
refresh their previous memories thus making them unable to move on with their lives.
The use of social media has great advantages in our lives too. It makes people to have closer
relationships. When one is using social media accounts they have a number of people they can
easily engage and discuss with their issues of concern as compared to those who do not use the
social media accounts. People get social support through advices and companionship that greatly
improve their lives. Technology has made it possible for people living in two different worlds
apart to stay connected. It has therefore promoted relationships beyond physical barriers. Incase
friends are unable to meet physically, they are still able to interact and share their thoughts.
Social media makes our relationships to remain active even when two people move to different
parts of the world.
Social media has played a great role in making us recognize the diversity within our groups.
People share their thoughts and the activities they are engaged in. This makes us to avoid
assumptions that we all share similar ideologies on various issues. The social media has equally
created a platform that allows people to express themselves freely more than they would have
done during physical meeting. It has therefore enable us to accommodate other people’s views
and thus promoting healthy relationships.
Despite having both the negative and positive sides, social media can be seen to promote
more positive lifestyle than the negative things that comes with it. As expressed in the points
above, the positive effects of social media in relationships are important in our lives for those
who are dating or married and for purposes of general interaction with people we have around
us. The positive points require more elaborations with examples that can make them to be
understood more easily.
