Description

English 124 Current Event Essay 3 Prompt

For your third paper you will be required to write an essay at least

8 pages long

building an argument based on one of the topics covered in Chapters 18-20, 23-25, or the Classic

Arguments section of your textbook. Choose which chapter you wish to use, draw evidence

from the readings in that chapter, and make a persuasive argument of your own based on the

chapter’s topic. These chapters and classic arguments give you a wide range of choices for

topics, so choose the one you find most interesting.

Your essay needs to be clear and unified under your thesis. Make sure to include specific

evidence from the articles you read, to show how and why you analyzed the articles the way you

did in your essay. Make sure to review the section in your textbook on proper MLA citation for

any quotes or paraphrases you use from your outside source.

Make sure to use one or more

sources outside the book to support your argument.

Outline
Introduction
Thesis
Although building the wall across the border will increase the rate of economic growth, protect
the culture, and reduce drug trafficking, critics have raised concerns over its effectiveness in
controlling illegal immigration, source of finances to fund it, environmental challenges, and
sending the wrong message to the rest of the world, which makes it not a viable government
project.
Topic
Building the wall is not the solution to illegal immigration in the United States
Background on the subject
Immigration is one of the most divisive and controversial issues in the United States. For
decades, there has been a wide range of proposals concerning immigration reforms, such as
amnesty, sanctuary cities, closing borders, and guest worker programs. However, in the recent
past, the issue of building a wall along the edge of Mexico and the United States has aggravated
the matter leading to the government shutdown. Therefore, this paper will discuss the reason
given by each opposing party and then conclude on the need to not building the wall.
Arguments for building the wall
Paragraph 1:
Background on your topic: building the wall will need a lot of workers
Body Paragraph 1: helping the economy grow through employment creation and increased tax
collection

Lead to an increased rate of employment

increase government taxes(revenue)
A lot of people will secure jobs in the building process, which will also help the government to
raise its revenue collection (Hayworth and Joe 27).
The source is credible because it is a scholarly book
Paragraph 2:
Background on your topic: prevention of major culture shifts
Body Paragraph format: protecting the culture

control over “no man’s land.”

preserve our American heritage
Paragraph 3:
Background on your topic: drug trafficking to the country
Body Paragraph format: reducing drug trafficking

Mexican drug traffickers

cocaine, marijuana
The border will help mitigate the challenge of drug trafficking, which is an issue Mexico is
notorious in (Hayworth and Joe 27).
The source is credible because it is a scholarly book
Arguments against building the wall
Paragraph 4:
Background on your topic: it is not clear who will fund this project
Body Paragraph format: who will finance it?

Will be a burden to American taxpayers

The conflict between the United States and Mexico
Quote: The wall will not work because it is not clear who will be funding it (Dear 170)
The quote is from a book, which is a verified, credible academic source
Paragraph 5:
Background on your topic: there is a significant number of geographical issues involved
Body Paragraph format: environmental and geographic issues

Disputes with those living near the border

Run-off spots to prevent floods

Interfering with the movement of Dunes
Quote: the border wall threatens biodiversity and environment conservation (Peters et al.)
The source is credible because it is a journal from a verified academic institution (Oxford)
Paragraph 6:
Background on your topic: sending unfriendly signals to the rest of the world
Body Paragraph format: sending wrong information to the rest of the world

jeopardize the relationship with other countries

against Catholic social teachings
Paragraph 7:
Background on your topic: Immigrants will still find ways of crossing it
Body Paragraph format: it is not an effective method

building channels

need to use modern technology instead
Conclusion
Although building a wall can help reduce the rate of illegal immigration, it is not the best
solution to the problem because immigrants will still find ways of crossing the border, it is
expensive, will lead to geographical issues, and ruin the relationship of the country with other
nations.
