Running Head: Backup Cameras

Backup Cameras

In the modern day world, vehicles have intricate designs that make it hard for drivers to
see out. The majority of the drivers find it difficult to see behind their cars since their sight is
obstructed. Further, most of the vehicles have bumpers that block the view of a driver despite the
efforts to look out of the window and turn around at the drivers’ seat. The obstruction of the
drivers view behind the car has become a major problem in nations since it causes serious
accidents where victims obtain severe injuries and others are killed. Drivers tend to cause
accidents while backing out of a parking area by hitting an individual that is possibly behind the
vehicle and out of the driver’s site (Arason, 2014). As such, in a bid to mitigate the issue of back
over accidents, it is imperative to implement a solution such as the use of backup cameras to help
enhance the driver’s view. In this paper, I plan to argue that the law for mandating backup
cameras for all vehicles is deemed just and valid because backup cameras lower “Back over”
accidents, eliminates blind spots, and simplifies parking in tight spots.
When most people hear of a car accident, they think of two vehicles crashing or a
pedestrian being hit or run over by a car. Back over accidents are deemed a minor problem in
society. However, the number of deaths resulting from back over accidents has increased over
the years primarily due to the car models being designed in the modern world. The majority of
the cars on the roads today make it hard for the drivers to see what is behind them. Some
vehicles are designed in a way that allows the drivers to see behind them after a distance of about
10 feet while others the range extends to 30 feet. As such, anything within the 10 feet distance is
believed to be in a blind zone where a driver cannot see and is likely to hit it while backing out.
In countries such as Canada, back over accidents are deemed a significant problem to the
society (“‘Backover? accidents a hidden problem in Canada,” 2017). These accidents have caused
more deaths and injuries to the people in the nation. Further, most of the victims of the back over
3
accidents include children, elderly and disabled individuals. Adults can easily escape the crash
since they are likely to move out of the way of a backing car or notify the driver that they will be
hit. On the contrary, the vulnerable population such as kids cannot be able to escape the back
over accident since they are unable to make a driver aware of their presence.
According to the Kids and cars advocacy group, approximately two children are killed
every week in a back over accident (“Lives shattered in driveway back over accidents,” 2007).
Further, about fifty children end up with severe injuries from the accidents. Also, reports from
the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) show that approximately 300 people are killed
annually from the back over accidents whereas about 18,000 individuals sustain injuries from the
crashes (“Danger of Blind Zones | Vehicle Blind Spots – Consumer Reports,” 2014). Various
issues contribute to the back over accidents that cause injuries and deaths of individuals.
A blind spot is one of the primary causes of the back over accidents. The blind spot is the
area around a car that a driver cannot see. A blind spot is also an area that blocks the view of a
driver. For instance, the rear area of the vehicle is a blind spot since it limits the visibility of a
driver. Most of the drivers are unable to see behind their cars and can cause accidents by hitting
anything that is at the blind spot. In most cases, children and elderly individuals are victims of
crashes that occur at blind spots. As such, it is imperative to identify measures that can be
implemented to eliminate blind spots so that a driver can have a perfect view of the area about
the car to avoid any accidents.
Additionally, drivers can also cause back over accidents as they try to back out of a
parking area. There is a chance that a child or an animal standing behind a car gets hit as the
driver attempts to back out of a field. Although the driver has a rearview mirror that is supposed
4
to make him see what is behind him, he might still hit something behind his vehicle. In most
cases, the drivers are not responsible for the back over accidents since their sight is clogged.
Back over accidents result from various issues that may appear to be minor problems to
some people. For instance, the latest models of the vehicles may be seen as development by
some people. On the contrary, these models limit the capacity of a driver to see anything behind
their cars and can thus cause back over accidents. Also, while trying to back out of area drivers
can hit anything behind their vehicles. The main reason is due to the blind spots at the rear of a
car. Blind spots also reduce the chances of a driver to identify anything behind his vehicle. Thus,
in a bid to mitigate the problem of back over accidents that cause death and injuries to
individuals including children, organizations such as National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration have promised to implement measures that can address the problem. One of the
proposed solutions to the issue of back over accidents is the installation of backup cameras in
vehicles.
As pointed out previously, back-over accidents are deemed as a minor problem in the
society. When car accidents take place, people usually think of single car accidents or
multivehicle crashes. Back over accidents occurs in situations where a vehicle that is backing
out of a parking space or any other location hits someone who is behind. In the recent past, these
accidents were unheard of. In fact, statistics indicate that a day will be spent without recording
such accidents. But what has happened? Such disasters have been increasing on a daily basis. As
a society, we need to rethink and come up with long-lasting solutions to this kind of issue that
has claimed some victims in our community (Delaney, 2005).
According to the recent statistics back over accidents accounted for over 143 fatalities
between the year 2003 and year 2010. However, in the recent past, the numbers of deaths that
5
are as a result of these accidents have been increasing on a daily basis. One viable solution that
can help the society evade this menace is the aspect of fixing cameras that will help the drivers to
check if there are people behind their parked cars. In an attempt at ensuring that the problem is
solved once and for all, the society needs to embrace by-laws that will provide that all the
vehicles are fixed with these cameras. In addition to these bylaws, all the drivers should always
be instructed to confirm if there are people behind their cars before starting off their journey. The
aspect will ensure that all the drivers take the necessary precautions to prevent such accidents.
Also, all the vehicles should be fixed with stickers that alarm drivers on the risks of back-over
accidents.
When a person is alarmed by anything, he or she tends to be keen on everything. The
aspect fixing stickers on vehicles that reminds the driver of the risks that are associated with back
over accidents will do the society great favor via increasing the attentiveness of the drivers. In
most cases, these accidents are caused by drivers who are not keen to observe the environment
surrounding their vehicles before starting off. Therefore, if a sticker that cautions the driver of
back-over accidents will to some extent increase his or her attention before unpacking their cars.
With such regulations as well as by-laws, the number of accidents that are as a result of
back over will significantly reduce. A reduction of accidents will be marked by a decline in the
name of deaths that are related to these accidents. The by-laws will ensure that all the drivers
who violate these provisions are charged with hefty penalties that will caution their colleagues.
In the long-run, the drivers will be keener before unpacking their cars hence reducing the number
of deaths that are associated with such accidents.
The aspects of making laws that are aimed at regulating these accidents generate
awareness to the general public. There is a claim offered by religious people that without law
6
there are no sins. The aspect means that if a particular law is enacted, any person who violates it
faces the consequences therein. For the solution to be viable, there must be by-laws which will
be adopted. Each driver will, therefore, be cautious before taking off. In fact, the mindset of
human beings is made in a way such that if they realize of impending danger, necessary
precautions are taken with much seriousness (Goode & Parrish, 2013).
There is a presumption that claims that a fool is a person who does something in a
particular way and gets similar and unwanted results. In this regard, if our laws aren’t producing
the desired results, we need to adjust our standards. Our current rules of operating have
numerous lope holes that have caused the number of back-over accidents to increase. Therefore,
the society needs to embrace the above solution to evade this menace. The aspect of fixing
cameras that helps drivers to view their backs before starting off will be a significant step in
increasing the standards of our vehicles. Besides, adjusting sticklers that cautions our drivers
over the risks of backing over in an careless manner will increase the level of our keenness (Hsu
et al, 2006)
The number of accidents that are as a result of back-over of cars has been increasing on a
daily basis. In this regard, a long-lasting solution to fixing cameras as well as stickers in our
vehicles will be critical. By-laws that will ensure their effectiveness must accompany such a
solution. Implementation of this by-law will be essential in reducing the number of deaths that
are associated with such accidents as well as create awareness among the public. The drivers will
be keener, and the standards of our operation will rise thus benefiting the entire society. The
costs that are incurred in the process of repairing damaged vehicles will be critical in improving
the standards of our cars.
