different concepts that seem to apply to the events or actions of individuals depicted in the film. For each concept, you should begin by briefly describing the relevant scene. You can assume that your reader has seen the film, so your description does not have to be detailed. Then relate that scene to the concept that you think applies. In what ways does the scene demonstrate the concept? How does the scene connect with the ideas discussed in lecture and the text to the concept you have chosen? Are there any parallels to the cases we have talked about in class or in the text? You should not be doing library research or going to outside sources for this assignment. I would like you to work with the course materials and show that you have thought about them, understand them and can discuss them in the context of the film.

FINAL ASSIGNMENT
PURPOSE
Movies entertain us, but they also provide interesting portrayals of society. For this assignment,
you will treat these portrayals in much the same as if you were going out into ‘the field.’ Your
task is to analyze, using concepts from the course, the behaviours, actions, and events depicted in
one of the films listed below. You are not being asked to critique the film as a work of art or
entertainment. Rather, you should think carefully about the human actions and events that are
being portrayed. Then try to make sense of them using your course materials and what you have
learned about social psychology.
INSTRUCTIONS
Choose one of the following films:
Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Time to Kill (1996)
Mean Girls (2004)
Inside Out (2015)
You should be able to find these films online (Shawshank Redemption and Mean Girls are
currently on Netflix). View the film you choose at least once. Two viewings may offer an
advantage. After reviewing your notes and readings, identify 3 different concepts that seem to
apply to the events or actions of individuals depicted in the film. I have provided a list of the
concepts that have been covered in class that you will draw from. You must use concepts from
at least 2 different categories.
For each concept, you should begin by briefly describing the relevant scene. You can assume
that your reader has seen the film, so your description does not have to be detailed. Then relate
that scene to the concept that you think applies. In what ways does the scene demonstrate the
concept? How does the scene connect with the ideas discussed in lecture and the text to the
concept you have chosen? Are there any parallels to the cases we have talked about in class or in
the text? You should not be doing library research or going to outside sources for this
assignment. I would like you to work with the course materials and show that you have thought
about them, understand them and can discuss them in the context of the film.
PRESENTATION
The analysis should be approximately 4-6 pages long, double-spaced. Please number your pages.
The analysis should also have a proper title page (be sure to include your name and student
number, and the name of your TA). A brief introduction and conclusion would be appropriate.
Lecture notes do not need to be cited, but references to the readings should be.
Pay particular attention to your writing style, spelling and grammar since these will be taken into
consideration in the marking.
You will be submitting your assignments on Avenue to Learn through Turnit.com. Please do not
hand in any hard copies. Assignments submitted late on the day they are due will be deducted
5%. An additional 5% will be deducted for each day the assignment is late after that. This
includes holidays and weekends.
EVALUATION
The assignment will be marked according to the following criteria: Does the analysis
demonstrate a full and accurate understanding of the concepts discussed? Does the analysis
incorporate references to the lectures and readings? Are the connections well-established and
well-argued? Have all the instructions regarding presentation been observed? Exceptional reports
will receive between 90 and 100%. Above average reports will receive between 80 and 89%.
Satisfactory or fully competent papers will receive between 70 and 79%. Less than satisfactory
or marginal reports will receive between 50 and 69%. Unacceptable papers will receive a failing
grade.
The assignment is due on Thursday March 15 at 5pm.
