week 4 discussion

Description

Discussion Question

This is an easy one. What’s the biggest winner or loser among the three stocks you selected in Week 1? Why has it done well or poorly? Follow up with others’ posts to see if you can find an appropriate stock to buy or sell for your own portfolio.

As you look at your biggest winner or loser, how have the company’s earnings performed versus expectations, and what revisions have occurred for forward year analyst earnings estimates?

Week 1 Assignment 1: Practical Exercises
1
Casey’s General Stores Inc, Kroger Co. and Ingles Inc. are all supermarkets in the United
States that are listed on the stock exchange. The glaring similarity among these companies is that
they all have a massive following with substantial market share leading to numerous sales for all
three franchises. Casey’s General Store Inc commenced operations in 1959 under Donald
Lamberti who got the store from his father. Since then the company has grown by leaps and
bounds and recently, in 1996, reached its $1billion in annual sales mark. The Kroger company
known merely by Kroger in the USA was founded as the name suggests, by Bernard Kroger in
1883 (Bernstein, 2015). It is among the largest supermarket chains in the USA by way of
revenue. It had $115.34 billion in revenue for the year 2016. It is the third largest retailer in the
globe and normally operated in the Midwestern and Southern parts of the United States. Ingles
Markets Inc. also emanates from the United States, particularly in North Carolina. It runs 193
supermarkets also like Kroger in the Southern parts of the United States.
Benchmark
The NASDAQ is a benchmark that stands for the National Association of Securities
Dealers Automated Quotations that was founded in 1972. It gives a feel of the movement of
stock on the securities exchange. For the retail sector, this is an appropriate indicator considering
the purchase of goods and services is directly correlated with or to the state of the economy
(Coffee Jr, Sale, & Henderson, 2015). With the Nasdaq, a drop or rise will indicate how the
market is fairing and in turn give a feel of the state of the economy and as such the purchases
made or will be made by the consumers. During the recession, there was a substantial drop in the
Nasdaq indicating tough times were ahead for many organizations including the retail store
market.

Outlook for the Industry
The market remains competitive, and with the advent of the online retail shops, it’s going
to get much harder to sustain one’s business. Overall, there seems to be an upward trend in the
retail store market, and more consumers are expected to purchase commodities, and with the
recession becoming a thing of the past, the market seems robust and more and more consumers
are expected to have a higher disposable income to purchase goods and services.

The combination of both security will reduce the risk by reducing the standard deviation but also
the return of portfolio, which is between 5.58% to 13.48%. Now it depends what is required
rate of return of the company it is between this range then the company can use the combination
of both security to maintain expected rate of return at reduced risk.
